Music Director Sought

Saints Peter & Paul/Santos Pedro y Pablo Episcopal Church in Southeast Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood, seeks a partner to lead our music-loving community. Ours is a church where the potential for creativity and growth is limitless.

We are a congregation in a period of rebirth. We strive to be a community hub where people gather to be/create/study/model beloved community, online and in person. For the past ten years we have offered worship every Sunday in English and in Spanish. Like so many churches, we find ourselves to be multifaceted in ways undreamed of before 2020. We currently offer live online worship, and do not expect to have full-scale in-person worship until a COVID-19 vaccine is widely available. We dream of a post-vaccine worship experience rich with music, choir, and congregational song in two languages. Between now and then, we will likely offer some in-person worship, possibly outside. We seek a musician to help lead all of these expressions of worship, developing and strengthening the church’s musical output.        

Must have:

  • Superior keyboard skills
  • Flexibility and versatility to play in a variety of musical styles
  • Excellent people skills
  • A love of volunteer choristers and instrumentalists at every skill level
  • Ability to lead rehearsals and collaborate with partner choristers and musicians

Ideal skills

  • Spanish language ability
  • Experience working with children
  • Adequate organ skills and desire to improve

Would be nice:

  • Knowledge of liturgical traditions
  • Choral directing experience
  • Close ties to the Portland music scene

The responsibilities for the Music Director include planning and leading music for Sunday morning worship, building a multi-generational choir, regular meetings/rehearsals with a worship team, and keeping the parish and wider community informed about musical goings-on at the parish using a variety of social media. This is a quarter-time, salaried position of approximately 10-12 hours per week beginning October 1. Annual salary range is $14,500-$17,000 depending on education and experience.
